The Garan in Koyasan

The Bell in the Garan

The local nickname of the bell in the Garan is "Koya Shiro". It is struck everyday between 4 o'Clock in the morning and 11 o'Clock in the evening to announce the time in Koyasan. Kukai already wanted to cast a bell for his monastary, but the first bell was completed under Master Shinzen. Due to thunderstorms in Koyasan the bell was destroyed several times . The present bell was made in 1547 and has a wonderful sound.
